A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT-VETERAN'S DAY

As you know, Veteran's Day is next week. The following is a message the President of Suffolk Community College has asked be shared:

In honor of Veterans Day, I would personally like to thank every Veteran student and employee for their service to our country. To mark this important day of remembrance, the entire college community is cordially invited and encouraged to participate in the various College activities that are being planned across our campuses in November.  These include:

  • MONDAY, November 3rd:  A special guest speaker from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America will visit the Michael J. Grant Campus, Captree Commons 113, at 11:00 a.m.

  • WEDNESDAY, November 5th: Representatives from the Northport VA Medical Center will be on hand to provide medical exams and benefit information to Veterans at the Ammerman Campus, Babylon Student Center, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

  • MONDAY, November 10th:   Student Veterans are invited to discuss their experiences in the military on the Eastern Campus, MLRC Room 107/108 – 11:00 a.m.

  • TUESDAY, November 11th:  Flag-Raising Ceremony by the Student Veterans Association at the Michael J. Grant Campus at 8:00 a.m., followed by a special Veterans Breakfast in the Faculty Dining Room

  •  WEDNESDAY, November 12th:   The culminating Veterans Ceremony will take place on Veterans Plaza at the Ammerman Campus during Common Hour, starting at 11 a.m.  Student Veterans from all three campuses will be present on this day.  There will be a color guard; vocal performances by student Veterans, including William Hyer, President of the Student Veteran Association at the Michael J. Grant Campus and Dan Hope, a student Veteran in the Music Program at the Ammerman Campus; welcoming remarks by Campus Executive Dean George Tvelia; a speech by the first Ammerman Campus Student Veteran Association (SVA) president, Oscar Salgado, who attended Suffolk and then transferred to Stony Brook University; and a challenge coin presentation to student Veterans.  The ceremony will be followed by a lunch for students in the Eaton’s Neck Room in the Babylon Student Center.  In the event of inclement weather, the full program will be held in the Eaton’s Neck Room.

Please plan on attending as many events as you can as a way of showing support to the student Veterans at Suffolk County Community College.  I am sure you are as proud of the service our Veterans have provided, as I am.  This calendar of events is one way we can come together to show our support for each and every Veteran at the College and in the community. I look forward to seeing you during this time.
