On October 14th, 2015 Suffolk County Community College will be sponsoring the 10th Annual Mental Health Awareness Day.

This is an excellent opportunity for all students to gain exposure to many different facets of the field of Psychology. As professionals, we all attend conferences as part of our continuing education. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get this type of experience (AND EARN EXTRA CREDIT!)

Psy 201-Brain and Behavior students: I will be presenting this day in the Mildred Green Room. We will have class this day over there as the topic is pertinent to our class.

All other students can attend a conference of choice and complete a 2-3 page paper on the topic following all the requirements of extra credit on the syllabus. This will make you eligible for up to 10 points extra credit on the FINAL EXAM.

Please see me if you have any questions.

In honor of National Coffee Day...

For all you caffeine lovers, take a look at the following link which reviews all the potential benefits of caffeine...

Please come and join Psychology Club, and let your friends and classes know!  Our speaker, Mr. Marco Ponzo, is a Master’s student at Stony Brook, and will be speaking on “LOVE: From a Social Psychological Perspective.” Ms. Toni Nhotsoubanh will also be talking about exciting FREE trips to area colleges that are available to students. Lastly, students will be given information on running for office, with an election to be held at the next meeting. Hope to see you there!

Many students have expressed concern over the cost of textbooks. As a result, the social sciences department at SCCC has made a great effort to assist students in reducing the expense of texts during the semester by putting many of the required texts on reserve at the library. Here is an updated list of all social science textbooks currently available through this program.

TEXTBOOKS ON RESERVE (as of 9/15/15)

These copies do not circulate but may be used at the library for two hours at a time.  Students may access them by presenting ID and requesting the relevant “PAM” number at the circulation desk. The most recent books put on reserve are in red.

One of the more fascinating studies in Psychology has been memorialized in the Hollywood film “The Stanford prison Experiment. “ An excellent extra credit opportunity is to watch this film, find one peer-reviewed article about it, and discuss your feelings regarding it.

Given what a large impact this study has had on the field, it also could be a perfect topic for the research paper for Psy 101. . If you decide to pursue it as such, please follow all the assignment requirements as outlined on the syllabus.

If you are a student who:

  • Has completed at least 12 college credits
  • Have completed Psy 101 with a B or better
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or better

You are eligible for psi Beta, the National Junior Honor Society in Psychology. If you are thinking of being a Psych major it is a great way to begin to build your resume and become involved in activities related to the field of Psychology.
If you are interested in more information, please see Professor Coleman (H217) for more details.

In Recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day

Suicide Prevention Coalition of LI and RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc

 “Here One Day”

Followed by a Q&A with Producer and Director, Kathy Leichter.

Thursday September 10, 2015   5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Wang Center Theater -- Stony Brook University

When filmmaker Kathy Leichter moved back into the apartment she grew up in after her mother’s suicide, she discovered a hidden box of audiotapes. Sixteen years passed before she had the courage to delve into this trove, unearthing details that her mother had recorded about every aspect of her life from the challenges of her marriage to a New York State Senator, to her son’s estrangement, to the highs and lows of living with bipolar disorder. HERE ONE DAY is a visually arresting, emotionally candid film about a woman coping with mental illness, her relationships with her family, and the ripple effects of her suicide on those she loved.

“Here One Day” provides an incredible opportunity for our community to come together and discuss personal and professional experiences, to trade resources and information, to learn, support, grow and heal.  Come experience this beautiful work of art and join in much-needed community conversation.

For more information about the film, please go to:

Open to the University community and to the public

Doors open at 5:30 and event begins promptly at 6:00pm

Event is free and Registration is required
