2) Final Exam Schedule:

    Psy 201, Monday/Wednesday at 9:30am- Wednesday, December 20th, 9:30am
    Psy101H- Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30am- Thursday, December 21st, 9:30am

TUESDAY DECEMBER 12TH-ALL CLASSES CANCELLED

STRESS

As the semester winds down, the level of stress is enormous. The New York Times has developed a healthy living series which recently published an excellent review of how to handle stress effectively. Its' important to always be vigilant about your stress levels and employ strategies to assist in the management of them! Reading through this article will definitely help with this.......

https://www.nytimes.com/guides/well/how-to-deal-with-stress

END OF THE SEMESTER

As we wind down the semester it is important to make sure you complete all necessary class requirements. If you need to make up either the midterm or a Quiz, please see me this week to schedule. Remember, failure to take an exam/quiz results in a 0 for that grade.

Also, if something happens that prevents you rom completing the final, please make sure you contact me. You can request an INC, which allows you until 4 weeks into the Spring semester to make it up. Remember, if you do not makeup the INC it automatically is converted into a 0.

Please see me of you have any questions about these or any other issues!

Evolution and the Brain

Generally speaking, humans have large brains in proportion to the size of their bodies. From an evolutionary standpoint, it has been suggested that as we evolved, natural selection prioritized thinking over brute strength and this is why we are built this way. The following is an article about a fascinating study trying to put this idea to the test........

VIDEOGAME/TECHNOLOGY SURVEY

In Psy 101, we have been talking about different methods utilized by Psychologists for collecting data. In addition, as part of the first writing assignment, students had to write an essay on their opinion about whether or not videogames/technology has a positive/negative impact on society. As part of this process, I summarized the data from these assignments and came out with the following results:

TOTAL for POSITIVE IMPACT: 13

TOTAL for NEGATIVE IMPACT: 19

TOTAL for CAN BE BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE: 7

It serves as a good example of how survey methods can be utilized to collect data on complex questions as part of the research process.

An example of Industrial/organizational Psychology

In Psychology 101, we discussed the various subdivisions of Psychology. One of these was Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

Industrial-organizational psychologists use psychological principles and research methods to solve problems in the workplace and improve the quality of life. They study workplace productivity and management and employee working styles. They get a feel for the morale and personality of a company or organization. And they collaborate with management to help plan policies, carry out screenings and training sessions, and develop a plan for the future.
On the job, industrial-organizational psychologists:
  • Apply psychological research to the workplace
  • Work within human resources offices
  • Help businesses hire more qualified employees
  • Help train and motivate workforce
  • Assess job performance
  • Increase business efficiency
  • Improve organizational structure
  • Improve quality of life for employers and employees
  • Ease transitions such as corporate mergers
  • Study consumer behavior
  • Work as a consultant
An example of such work is to assist businesses in understanding consumer behavior. The following link provides some insight into how understanding of behavioral principles is applied by casinos to maximize profits...

NATURAL DISASTERS AND MENTAL HEALTH

As areas of our country begin the process of re-building from the two most recent hurricanes, it is an opportune time to reflect on what we have learned about how these events impact their survivors emotionally and psychologically. A natural reaction to going through a trauma is such feelings as anxiety and depression, so it is important to note that the presence of these emotions does not mean that the person is experiencing a psychological disorder. There are a multitude of factors which can influence whether or not these normal reactions evolve into a condition which may need the focus of clinical attention by a professional. The following link provides an excellent summary of some of the research available on this issue:

WELCOME STUDENTS OF THE FALL 2017 SEMESTER

I am hoping we have a stimulating and enjoyable semester as you experience the world of Psychology. My goal is to offer students who are willing to work hard an opportunity to be immersed in the world of Psychology, explore topics of interest in more detail, and earn a good grade in the course.  On that note, I would like to share a few ideas of things to focus on to both enhance your course experience and give yourself a chance to obtain the best grade possible:

Homework: It will be important to consistently complete your standing homework assignments. If you do, they will provide you valuable context and reinforcement of class lectures. Your standing homework assignments are:

 1. Keep up with the reading: It is a general assumption you will be doing a reading to accompany the class lectures. This will help enhance your understanding of the material and give you a deeper knowledge of the subject matter

 2. Watch the assignment videos: The videos associated with the lectures were designed to provide you more details about different topics as well as reinforce material covered in class. Watching them is an excellent way to enhance your understanding and assist with the process of committing the material to memory for test preparation.

3. Assignment Due Dates: Make sure you are aware of the due dates and requirements for all writing assignments and follow them!!!

 4. Stay in touch: Many issues can be resolved earlier in the semester and can make the rest of the semester go much smoother. Make sure you are familiar enough with course expectations to ask the questions early in the semester. Feel free to ask during class time so everyone can get the benefit of the information

5.Check the blog on a regular basis for updates on the class, additional reading assignments, and extra credit opportunities.

6. Class Participation:
Please feel free to share thoughts, ideas, and questions during class. I find class discussion an integral part  of a stimulating learning experience and hope you will be an active participant in the class.

If you find any websites or resources that are helpful to you in the course please share them with me as my website is a dynamic site and I am always looking for resources that will be useful to students

YOUR FIRST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT is to familiarize yourself with the website which will be an invaluable resource throughout the semester!

END OF SEMESTER/FINAL EXAMS

As we wind down to the end of the semester, I just want to remind you of a few things to keep in mind.

1) Makeups: If you need to makeup either the Midterm or Quiz 3 & 4, please see me to schedule. The deadline for doing so is Tuesday, May 9th. Any missed exams or quizzes will be counted towards a 0 on the final average.

2) Final Exams will be on the following dates:

    Psy 215,  Monday/Wednesday, 9:30am: Wednesday, May 17th.
    Psy 215, Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30am: Tuesday, May 16th
    Psy101H, Tuesday/Thursday, 11:00m: Tuesday, May 16th
    Psy 201H, Tuesday/Thursday, 12:30pm:Tuesday, May 16th
    Psy 201, Thursday, 3:00pm, Thursday, May 11th

3) Inc: If for any reason, you cannot complete the course (i.e. take the final), you must contact me before the grades are put in. We can discuss the possibility of an Incomplete (Inc)but it is important to remember that an Inc must be granted it is NOT AUTOMATIC. If an Inc is not granted the missed exam is counted as a 0 towards final average.

4) Absences: Up to 3 absences does not affect final grade but anything over 3 may lead to a reduction of two points per absence above 3.

5) Grade discrepancy: In the event that there is a discrepancy between your final grade which is issued and the one that you earned, please contact me as soon as possible. I will ask you to produce the actual items that have the grade on them and we can compare them to those in the grade book. Remember, it is your responsibility to prove that the issued grade is incorrect. I will be here Wednesday May 17th between 8:00-9:30 and you can stop by and get your grade and ensure it is accurate.

If you have any further questions about the end of the semester please make sure you come see me.

Good luck on your finals and have a great summer!

There is always hope that such discussions will reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and encourage those struggling with them to pursue help. FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT NEW NEW YORK STATE LAW REGARDING COLLEGE TUITION

As you may have heard, Governor Cuomo and the NYS Legislature have enacted a program for free SUNY/CUNY tuition for some New Yorkers which will be phased in over the next three years.  This program will be administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (or HESC), the same agency that administers most state aid programs, including TAP.

Details remain very sketchy, but the HESC website does have a good, but basic,  Q and A section on it.  I’m sending you the link directly to that section.    There is also a place for interested parties to enter an email address and “subscribe” to receive further information as it becomes available (though most of the SUNY staff trying to do so yesterday were unsuccessful).

This award will provide up to $5500 per year and will be the “last dollar in” – at this point applicants and their families should be encouraged to file the FAFSA and TAP applications as they normally would.   The actual tuition discount will be higher than the $5500 at SUNY/CUNY schools where the tuition exceeds that amount but we won’t have to worry about that piece.

We’ve gotten dozens of phone calls in the past two days, and we are referring people to hesc.com (though the website seems to be overloaded, we can only get on about half the times we try).

More information will be shared as details become available.

PREVENTION OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

In Psy 201, we just finished covering how environmental factors can shape the physical structures of the brain through Neuroplasticity.

As research progresses, a slow shift from looking at age-related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease as a purely biological issue to one that is influenced by environment is occurring. As the following article suggests, this opens up the possibility of using environmental modifications as a means of prevention or possibly slowing down the progression central nervous system disorders.

As part of our class discussion in Brain and Behavior, we have been talking about the power of some of the newer technological data collection methods. WELCOME SPRING 2017 STUDENTS

Welcome students of the Spring 2017 semester!

       3. Make sure you are aware of the due dates and requirements for all writing assignments and follow them!!!
